Every person is a unique seed in the world’s garden.
Each seed grows a leader from which greatness can blossom.
Imagine the future of our planet if we nurture each leader to sprout greatness.

LGL Empowerment Series

Grandparent Workshop
April 30-May 1, 2010

UNIQUE Leadership: Grandparents Nurturing Leadership Gardens

Sponsored by Western Oregon University - Division of Extended Programs

This workshop is offered as part of the Leadership Garden® Legacy "Family" Empowerment Series. The Leadership Garden is a metaphor for leadership development with grandparents as the natural stewards of family legacy.

By making the abstract concrete and connecting to nature, the workshop is designed to harness the U.N.I.Q.U.E. (understanding, nurturing, inventive, quality, unstoppable, expression) power of unconditional love, wisdom, and leadership of grandparents both at home and in the community.

In an eight-step process grandparents will attend to the age-old questions who am I, how do I matter, and what is my purpose, as well as what does it really mean to be a leader and how can that make a difference in my life, especially for my family and grandchildren.

The workshop blends metaphor, fable, exercises, discussion, coaching, and playfulness to provide a life affirming educational experience.

Workshop participants will:

  • distinguish the two conditions of Leadership Gardens
  • examine your current reality and contrast that to the one you desire
  • construct your leader balance wheel and identify the survival or thriving tendencies of four leader behaviors
  • demonstrate leader-friendly gardening practices
  • create a unique purpose and aim statement
  • examine the leadership attributes necessary for thriving leadership and identify new behaviors that will empower your unique purpose and aim
  • create goals you want to achieve inside your family
  • design a plan that will help you blossom your family leadership

The workshop is conducted in a facilitated process by Debra J. Slover that provides instruction via her audio book fable story of U.N.I.QU.E.: Growing the Leader Within, author illustrations, personal journaling, coaching, discussion, role-play, and action planning.
